Smart bins look much like any other high-street litter bin, except that these amazing pieces of technology can hold five times more rubbish than a normal bin. It also has the ability to send out a notification to the PRS head office when it’s near to reaching full capacity. This ensures that odorous, overflowing bins will become a thing of the past.
October 2017 saw the introduction of this revolutionary technology onto the streets of Newham Council in London. Twenty-six Bigbelly smart bins were installed outside of schools, tube stations and other busy locations in Newham where littering is an issue.
This initial wave of installations is the beginning of a long-term strategy and expansion programme. Its’ aims are to educate a wide range of stakeholders including Newham residents and collection staff on the benefits of having a Smart bin.
So how do Smart rubbish bins work?
The Bigbelly smart bins consist of a solar PV module, which provides the power for the internal compactor. A Smart unit takes up roughly the same footprint of a normal high-street bin however, because of the compactor; it can hold a greater amount of waste than the average bin. In fact, more than five times more waste! The solar-powered compactor exerts 1,200 pounds of force and runs on less than 5Wh per day – all totally powered by the sun's energy.
Smart rubbish bins create business efficiencies
These ‘smart’ little bins are incredibly clever and are able to email PRS staff when they need emptying, through using cloud enabled connectivity. This in turn will enable PRS to improve its time management of employees. No longer will staff have to attend to bins that don’t need changing, or are half full.
Blind checking all bins on a regular basis will eventually be no longer necessary as PRS will be able to better manage staff rotas and send employees to the locations where the bins are ready to be emptied. Less staff checks means a reduction of our carbon footprint, which all goes towards helping the environment.
Managing Director, Doug Wilkinson, of PRS, has this to say about the Smart bins:
“By introducing these smart bins we have improved the effectiveness of our litter bin emptying service significantly. We are currently emptying these smart bins, when they tell us they are full and only then – the smart bin sends an e mail direct to the operational teams. This has resulted in a performance for emptying of around 95% efficiency for the units. The benefits of this are that it allows our staff to focus on other aspects of keeping the local environment clean and tidy such as fly tips and litter removal, things which local people complain about more.”
