In December 2016, Newham Council opened its doors to a new environmental maintenance service to keep the southern wards of the borough clean – Public Realm Services Ltd (PRS).
With deeper austerity cuts from central government, the Mayor of Newham, Sir Robin Wales, had an innovative idea where he could maintain the public realm services for Newham residents, whilst at the same time reducing the long term costs to the borough – by forming a private business to manage the services which was wholly owned by the London Borough of Newham as the sole shareholder.
In forming this company, the staff from Newham Council, who may otherwise have been faced with further cuts in budgets, have kept their jobs with PRS but with potential growth in business may create further job opportunities. Not only was this positive for the staff, but it enabled PRS to have a head-start by launching the company with extremely experienced staff, with a rich understanding of local knowledge.
PRS is being led by Managing Director Doug Wilkinson. Doug has both public sector and commercial experience and has in previous roles being the contractor and the commissioner of services. This perfect blend will pave the way for PRS to quickly transition from a Council-minded company to one with commercial drive, responsibilities and financial targets. Doug believes that the PRS team can positively challenge competition in the private sector, as they already have extensive experience and a proven track record by providing an invaluable service to the Council.
PRS can offer the following services:
Property and House Clearance
If a house or property needs emptying and cleaning, PRS has a dedicated property and house clearance service for this.
Waste and rubbish removal
PRS is committed to keeping the borough and the areas where its clients are clean. PRS can help with any waste and rubbish removal, disposal of bulk waste (including fly-tip items) and leaf and weed removal. PRS has introduced new smart bins - a new compactor bin that can take up to five times more waste in the same sized bin. Read more on our dedicated Bigbelly Bin page, if you think your public space could benefit from these.
Power washing services
Sometimes when a sweep and a surface clean just isn’t enough, the PRS team will get out their power washing equipment and muck in. Public pavements and private streets can benefit from a power wash periodically to help uplift everyday grime.
For blocked drains, PRS owns drain-jetting equipment to help shift the build-up in blocked pipes. Read more about our power washing services.
chewing gum removal
PRS can also help with chewing gum removal. In public places, people will often spit their chewing gum out. This leaves an unsightly mark on the pavement or floor surface. The PRS team have the equipment to get you out of a sticky mess.
Internal cleaning services
For housing associations, managing agents of multiple properties, organisations and businesses, PRS has an internal cleaning team to keep your public access areas spotless. Find out more about our internal cleaning services.
External cleaning and maintenance
For all external spaces, PRS can undertake a number of jobs. For Newham Council it currently empties and cleans litter bins, removes bulk waste items and clears any road gulley of debris. PRS is on top of flyposting and graffiti and removes these as quickly as possible to uphold a clean look for the borough. If you have a large external space PRS would be happy to maintain these for you. Read our extensive list of external cleaning and maintenance services.
Grab vehicle hire
When you have a lot of heavy materials that needs transporting, why not consider hiring one of our Grab Vehicles, along with a driver, to help transport your goods. Our grab vehicle hire services includes a dedicated driver.
Transport operator/licence compliance
Companies that use large vehicles must ensure that their drivers are compliant and have all their road and safety training up-to-date. PRS offers Driver CPC training courses catered to the company’s need.
Companies and organisations seeking any of these services should ask PRS to tender for this work.
